So Grace had her 6 month well check yesterday, and we were surprised at the results of her checkup.  First off, I never realized what a little thing she is; Grace went from the 90th percentile in height to the 31th percentile, her weight is in the 7th (even despite all the eating she does!)  As for her head - she's in the 95th percentile.  Auntie Elaine affectionately dubbed her "bobblehead".  *sigh*

The pleasant surprise is that her development was noted as "well above average".  The doctor and nurses were shocked to see that she's not only crawling, but she's also lifting her stomach off the ground, and moving into a sitting position from crawling.  The doctor noted that she's doing what most 8 or 9 month old kids are just starting on - to which we said "that's not necessarily a good thing - her and James generally go in opposite directions!" ;)  It's pretty neat to see her figure out how to turn on toys, find us hiding in other rooms, and laughing when we say "tickle", though.  I'm really looking forward to finding out what her first word will be.  Hopefully it will NOT be "Ace"! 

We're pretty proud of our little G either way - it just proves that great things come in small packages! :D

I still can't believe Grace is crawling (scooting...?) around so quickly now.   Now exactly six months old, Grace knows the word "tickle" without me even having to raise a finger at her.  She's also figured out how to cough for attention...sheesh.  Grace is such a silly little chatterbox - I can't wait until she starts telling me all about the world around her!

Grace is growing amazingly fast!  It seems like such a short time ago when she was just a sleepy little newborn - can you believe she's now 5 months old?  She has all sorts of new tricks up her short sleeves right now.

She's starting to dine on solid foods, although not quite as enthusiastically as James did when he was a baby.  I think she's trying to hold out for the fruits she sees the rest of us eating!

In the past month, Grace moved out of Dan and my room, and moved in with James.  Thankfully, James is a heavy sleeper - Grace occasionally wakes up earlier than him and likes to sing!  Another funny thing is that Grace is sleeping in the toddler bed, while James sleeps in the crib still.  James still likes the comfort of his bed, and unlike Grace he moves a LOT in in sleep.  We'll let those two swap beds down the line when they're ready - either that or James will graduate from crib to twin bed right away!

Can you imagine that Grace is over 3 months old now!??!  Can you imagine that I'm just finally getting her birth announcement sent out?!?!  Me neither.  ;)  It's amazing how behind in things a person can get when they have a toddler and a baby in the house!  I'm still in awe at how quickly the kids grow.  Grace went from being a tiny baby sleeping in a laundry basket, to a baby who is wide eyed, babbling, and sleeping in her own crib!

I swear, I've had to rewrite this post at least 4 times.  If it isn't James deleting it with his stellar new computer skills, it's me accidentally clicking on the image link and botching it up so I delete my post!  James deleted the post more times than I've botched though...how can a kid be so fast to climb up on a chair and mash my post away when I just walked away from less than 30 seconds!?!?  We're talking "to go pick up a pencil" or "get a drink from the fridge" fast here, people!!!  My guess is that he knows this post is about Grace.  After all, she's getting mighty cute now:

...and yet how can I get so few hours sleep?  Wonders will never cease.  Of course, I didn't account for the many hours that Grace can nap on a person - namely me!

She does spend a good amount of time awake during the day - usually when James is running around and happily "blah blahing"!  I guess even Grace has a hard time sleeping through her yap-happy brother!  :)

Dan, James, and Grace

Now that he's an official Older Brother, James has been very busy lately getting ready to teach Grace all of life's most important lessons.  But because Grace spends most of her time doing this:

Sleeping Comfortably in Her Laundry Basket

James found it better to compile a photo log for her to review once she's old enough to focus on an object more than 12 inches away from her.

Lesson #1:  It's very important to have good manners.  If offered a cup of Goldfish crackers, always say "da da!" (thank you), sit down wherever you're at, and say grace.  Only then can you start to shovel a fistful of crackers into your mouth.  It's okay to drop a cracker or two also - just remember to pick them off the floor and eat them sometime before someone steps on it.

Lesson #2:  It's always good to help out the family.  This is particularly true during tax season!  As much as dad politely declines your help by telling you to go play somewhere else, he really wants your advice on adding up all those numbers.  (After all, you will always end up with a refund, whereas when he does it, it's up in the air!).  It's okay if he doesn't trust your numbers though...you can always supervise and cheer him on.  The louder, the better.

Lesson #3:  Toys always have more than one function.  When the box says "Train Table", it really means it's a train table, a rock climbing wall, and a handy place to store your cups of water.

Lesson #4:  Never poo-poo the classics.  While those flashy light up toys, those chewy plastic toys, and those cool noisy toys are fun, classics like spoons and pots, crayons and paper, and good old cardboard boxes are still really really cool!  Also, if you see a cardboard box, you absolutely must sit in it first.

Lesson #5:  Always take time to celebrate your accomplishments.  It's hard work to sit up, roll over, and wave "bye bye"!  When you finally figure out how to do it, smile and try your trick again and again and again!  It's a great feeling to accomplish something new!

Lesson #6:  Explore new things and places.  Mom and Dad will bring you to neat places like the mall, restaurants, and parks.  Don't be afraid to do things like tasting paper, throwing down those spoons, and crawling through those shiny logs!  The world is an exciting place and life is too short to spend it hidden behind mom.

It's amazing how fast time flies after having a kid.  It's even more amazing how fast time flies after the second one is born!!  On March 30, 2009 at 3:09 pm, the Chan Clan was finally able to meet its newest addition face to face:  Grace Chung Yan Chan!

Grace's entrance into the world was far less dramatic than James' (thank God!!!), but every bit as exciting!  Weighing in at 7 lbs 9 oz (the EXACT same weight as James when he was born!), and standing at 20 inches, Grace is doing fine!  I'm happy to say that I got to bypass all of the labor part of the actual labor - because of the difficulty of the first birth, and because the high chance of the same thing happening again, it was decided that having a repeat cesarean section would be the best route to take. 

We had to arrive at the hospital by 8 am and was scheduled to be the second cesarean of the day.  However, due to other women deciding to deliver their babies breech/having multiples/getting in the way (just kidding, those women were major troopers!), we got pushed down the line and didn't get into the OR until after 2 pm.  In the meantime, Dan and I got to watch a lot of TV and relax.  Dan didn't seem to mind hanging out in those scrubs!

When I finally got into the OR, I was just a little nervous - not about getting cut open, but what would happen when I got the spinal (epidural).  My last experience with getting the epidural was not the best (okay, it was excruciating), so I wasn't feeling too optimistic when an anesthesiologist who was a year or two older than Dan told me he was going to be administering the shot.  I was thankfully proven wrong - one numbing shot and one spinal shot later, my torso was numb and the operation began!  Not too much later, Grace was born!

Recovery was really quick this time around as well - I went into the hospital on Monday, and was able to go home by Wednesday afternoon!  But not before having our celebratory lunch!  I though the "It's a Girl!" champagne glasses were a nice touch (now to find a set that say "It's a Boy!" - I didn't get that when James was born!)

Amazingly, the hospital food wasn't too bad!
