On a Yahoo! Japan auction site a few years ago, somebody sold 20 real live Pikachus for $925 million.
Translation from the Japanese site:
Link (In Japanese)"We capture each one after your order, so we guarantee its health! These are Pikachus plucked straight from the natural Pikachu forest, so they're of much higher quality than ones you'd get from a breeder or in other regions. Great for those who are lacking in good conversations with family, who want solace if living alone, who need a new hobby, who love cute and trendy things, or who are looking for a present for a girlfriend or a child. Limited edition! Limited to only 20! First come first serve! We'll include a 60-minute video on how to raise a Pikachu if you buy 3 months worth of Pokemon food."
I've been done in. People have no consideration for pregnant women who will spontaneously buy cute stuff without batting an eyelash. How could they...
Someone brought a Daiso shop to the Bay Area...and it's only a 5 minute drive from my house.
Now can you imagine the sheer amount of Japanese cutie stuff you can find in that shop? Onigiri wrappers! Bento Boxes up the wah-zoo! Soft fluffy pet beds that look like apples! Bowls! Plates! Toys! Adorably cute cleaning supplies! And the worst part...everything is like $5 or cheaper. I don't stand a chance!!!!!
So naturally, I had to go online and find as many cute bento boxes pictures I could find so that I would have an excuse to go shopping for those teddy bear shaped mini soy sauce containers, onigiri molds and wrappers, and of course, those awesome contraptions that make my boiled eggs look like little fish or cars (I bought one...they are so cool!).
Give me a few weeks...I heard pregnancy can make women do crazy things...I might just have a house full of bentos yet!
If you looked at Dan's blog recently, you've probably seen his post on "Natural Viagra Ice Cream". While we didn't try the viagra-cream, we did try the local Green Tea Ice Cream and Wasabi Ice Cream. (Green Tea was AWESOME....Wasabi tasted like vanilla with a wasabi "kick in the head" aftertaste.) They've got some seriously weird ice creams in Japan - purple sweet potato, sesame, tomato, salt from Hakata (or Hokkaido - your choice!), young barley leaf...you name it, they have it.
The photo special was then followed up by another photo special documenting the even wackier flavors in Japan, including pit viper, Indian Curry, salad (with chunks!!), soy sauce, and raw horseflesh ice cream. If you look at that horse-cream, even the horse is running away in terror!
I suppose in the US, we have our share of weird ice creams as well...in Baltimore, Dan and I sampled some of the local flavors including garlic almond chocolate chip, pop rock, and barbeque flavored ice cream. FYI - BBQ ice creams tastes like creamy cold BBQ sauce...oh my gawd it was so nasty....
